APW BANGSAR

Site visit in KL

I had visited APW located at Bangsar provided by my tutor since I can't attend Penang trip with my class.

APW was first established in 1952 as Art Printing Works, a commercial printing factory. Its original location was in Lebuh Ampang, before relocating to its present Bangsar location in 1965. From the 60s to the 80s, Art Printing Works was one of the most prolific printers in Kuala Lumpur.

In 2013, an idea was conceived to repurpose underutilized spaces within the printing factory - to convert the factory into an inspiring creative space. Various spaces have since been reimagined to create an urban campus for the community, by bringing together individuals and groups from diverse backgrounds through events, workshops, and programmes.

CENTRAL MARKET KUALA LUMPUR

Site visit in KL

After visited APW Bangsar, I also went to the historic place in KL - Central Market KL.

A Malaysian cultural landmark, Central Market has been classified as a Heritage Site by the National Heritage Department. Similar to London’s Covent Garden or San Francisco’s Fisherman’s Wharf, the 120-year-old Central Market has undergone several renovations over the years to attract younger generations and to foster a greater appreciation for racial tolerance and integration.

Central Market is strategically located close to major public transportation links, making it easy to access from all major KL destinations. The second floor has several restaurants and a food court serving Asian cuisine.

LETTERPRESS PRINTING

FORGOTTEN CULTURE

Letterpress printing is an old printing method where the paper is inked and impressed simultaneously manually. With the movable type method, a lead type is used instead of ink and it is limited to fixed fonts and sizes. You would have to play around with a fixed set of words.

Letterpress printing should have gone the way of gramaphones and typewriters with the advent of the digital age. But the craftsmanship and tactile feel of letterpress products can’t be denied.
